1.0       INTRODUCTION

As Part of the commemoration of World Old People’s Day that falls on 1st October, The Parks & Gardens Section of Livingstone City Council Engineering Department was called upon to carry out an inspection of Maramba Old People’s Home in the City of Livingstone. This report is a compilation of the findings of the inspection which was carried out on 10/09/2024. From the outset, it should be stated here that, the initial request was for Parks & Gardens to merely make an assessment of the request to prune or trim some trees at the facility and make recommendations on any Landscaping works that they can embark on in order to improve the living environment of the residents and staff at the facility. The first impression gotten when we arrived was the sight of the residents huddled up under the cool shade provided by the existing Trees. We therefore, instead had to refocus on the trimming of dead dry branches which were precariously hanging overhead. Upon closer scrutiny of the site, it was however, deemed necessary to conduct a holistic assessment of what needs to be done to the facility in order to make  necessary recommendations for renovations to be done to it so as to improve the quality of life for the occupants.

As a section, we may not be experts in the field of civil and structural engineering works but there were observable areas that need urgent attention even from a lay perspective.  It is therefore, felt that, for the purpose of ascertaining a comprehensive Bill of Quantities of construction materials needed and general scope of works, the management of The Home are hereby strongly advised to engage the services of professional contractors.

2.0       SITE AUDIT

The inspection involved a guided tour of the facility during which observations were made of the features that need to be worked on. As stated earlier, the initial brief was to merely carry out an assessment for Tree trimming. However, is was evident upon reaching the Home that the residents were mostly seated under the shade provided by the very trees they had requested to be pruned. It is therefore felt that, what will need to be done is shaping the Hedges and pruning a few low lying dead branches. There is a Big Tree that has some Dry Dead Branches which need to be cut as soon as possible. These branches were situated rather too high into the tree canopy hence the services of a Cherry Picker were required. The problem we were bound to face was the maneuverability of the vehicle considering the constrained space inside the facility. However, we are determined to move in quickly to carry out the Tree pruning so as to protect and safeguard the lives of our senior citizens. The tree pruning assignment was successfully executed the very next day!

3.0       INSPECTION  FINDINGS

3.1       PLANNING OF WORKS

It is of vital importance that before any works can be embarked on, the residents and staff of Maramba Home for the Aged be engaged, so that they can give feedback on what they would like to be worked on and state their specific needs. This level of engagement will also help them be more receptive to the changes that the renovation works will bring about. Depending on the extent of the renovation works to be carried out, there is need to seek Council Planning Permission or approval. The other aspect that needs consultation on is the extent of changes allowable due to the age of the structures. The National Heritage Conservation Commission may need to be consulted so as to seek their guidance as to whether there may be restrictions on what can be done to the old buildings.

3.2       ENERGY AUDIT

Zambia as a country is still reeling from the Climate Change triggered effects of draught and Livingstone as a City has not been spared. Maramba Home for The Aged is in dire need off a standby Solar Power Generation system in order to ensure there is an uninterruptible supply of electricity to the facility. The many dangers that constant power outages and a poorly lit environment poses to the residents of advanced age or in this demographic at the facility cannot be overemphasized.

There was a general lack of adequate light sources around the buildings and the few that were present need to be fitted with bulbs so that the residents and staff can be afforded an opportunity of spending some time outdoors even in the evenings.

3.3       LANDSCAPING WORKS

The remodeling of the existing Land surface will mostly involve manipulating the already planted vegetation and suggesting more plant species especially flowers which are going to enhance the visual appeal of the place. With the onset of the rains, there is need to arrest the possible effects of gully erosion by flattening the land and creating water drainage canals which will be discharging excess runoff water into built up concrete drainages leading out of the facility.

There are  a few fruit trees whose bases do not hold water hence bucket like shapes need to be made by heaping soil around the tree bases  as these can go a long way in ensuring the Trees receive adequate water and hold it long enough for it to seep into the root system. Used tyres or pan bricks can also be used for this purpose by creating rings around these fruit trees. These can then be filled up with dry leaves or grass to serve as a water retaining mulch. This will ensure the residents receive a constant supply of fresh fruits from the orchard. The flower beds need to be shaped nicely in this manner so that they can also hold water. The existing Duranta erecta ssp. Plant Hedges needs regular trimming using a pruning shear so as to keep them well tendered and manicured.

It is hereby strongly suggested that there be a small portion of Land which should be set aside for planting grass so that the residents can also experience such a natural surface as most of the ground is largely devoid of any vegetation.

3.4       STRUCTURAL RENOVATIONS

The buildings have over time, on account of their age, suffered from visible signs of dereliction hence are in dire need of renovation. The walls and floors have cracks and this seriously threats the structural integrity of the buildings and thus pose and existential threat to the occupants. There is need to fit all the roofs with gutters so that the roof rainwater runoff is directed onto spoon drains which should be constructed so that it does not cause damage to the ground by digging trenches during heavy down pours of rain.

All the buildings need to be fitted with modern ceiling boards and the floors needs to have rough or nonslip tiles laid.

The outside ground consists of clay soils which would become a serious danger during the rainy season by the residents slipping and falling hence more walk ways need to be constructed using either fine stones or  rough stone slabs and the existing ones need to have hand railings.

It is important that all the suggested works be done quickly so as not to cause too much anxiety among the residents from their impeded mobility during the period of the renovation works.

3.5       RECOMMENDATIONS

In light of the brief inspection carried out at Maramba Old People’s Home on 10th September, 2024, the following recommendations are hereby strongly made and need to be attended to as a matter of greater urgency and should be not be carried out as a mere façade or superficial exercise done to commemorate the World Old People’s Day.

1.   As a long term measure, the current asbestos roofing sheets need to be removed and replaced with modern IBR or Corrugated iron or metal roofing material as the asbestos exposes the elderly residents to disease on account  of its debilitating carcinogenic effects. The European union begun banning the use of Asbestos roofing in the 1980s with the full ban taking effect in 2005. Asbestos is a group of minerals that were widely used in construction, insulation, and manufacturing due to their durability and fire-resistant properties. However, asbestos poses significant health risks when disturbed or damaged, releasing harmful fibers into the air. The dangers of asbestos include:

1.1 Lung Cancer: Asbestos is a known carcinogen, and inhaling its fibers can cause lung cancer.

1.2 Mesothelioma: A rare and aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart.

1.3 Asbestosis: A chronic lung disease causing shortness of breath, coughing, and scarring.

1.4 Pleural Plaques: Calcified deposits on the lining of the lungs, often indicative of asbestos exposure.

1.5 Pleural Effusion: Fluid buildup in the lungs, potentially leading to respiratory distress.

1.6 Respiratory Issues: Asbestos exposure can cause chronic coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

When asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are disturbed or damaged, they release fibers into the air, posing a risk to:

1.6.1 Construction workers

1.6.2 Demolition workers

1.6.3 Maintenance personnel

1.6.4 Homeowners (during renovations or repairs)

1.6.5 People living near asbestos-contaminated sites

2.0   Introduce species richness of Biodiversity of flora and Fauna. This should be done by purchasing various ornamental plant species especially the flowering ones and planting them all around the facility. The Department of Parks and Wildlife should be engaged so that some manageable small rodents and birds such as Rabbits and peacocks can also be introduced at the facility to spice up the attractions of the place. There is a possibility that some of our older relatives resident at the facility may not have seen these animals before in their whole life.

3.0 For safety reasons, there should be more walkways with Guard hand rails and bare ground surfaces should be covered with nonslip stone slabs.

4.0 The Old building that used to be a Pig Pen should either be repurposed for another use for either keeping egg laying chickens or as a storage room. It should not be allowed to totally rundown as there were financial resources spent on it.

5.0 The facility management is hereby urged to employ the services of a dedicated professional florists and horticulturists to help take care of the surroundings of these facility due to the many intangible Environmental health benefits of a well taken care of green environment especially to the elderly.

6.0 The Building and living quarters are rather dingy and somewhat stuffy hence there is need to have more aeration by opening up more window spaces to let in more fresh air and natural light especially during the day. The windows should come fitted with netting to keep away mosquitoes and other crawling insects. It should be noted that Care be exercised not to over open up the living quarters as this would make the residents susceptible to over exposure from the increased draught. The rooms should be air conditioned and indoor heating should be provided during very cold seasons for the Senior citizens.

7.0 The facility should be provided with more and better sitting benches and chairs.

8.0 The facility needs to be supplied with modern Wheel chairs for those residents who are incapable of movement unassisted. However, as much as possible, the residents should be encouraged to be moving around as a form of mild exercise to prevent the debilitating effects of tissue atrophy from leading a sedentary lifestyle.

9.0 There were a number of identified mounds of Earth which can be fenced off and used as vegetable gardening spaces to provide the residents with an endless supply of fresh vegetables.

10.0 The powers that be should consider bringing all Old people’s Homes in the country under a TRUST for closer and better standardized management protocols as this would lead to the uplifting of Living standards for our senior Citizens.

N.B. The management staff of the facility are hereby called upon to seek the services of a Professional contractor to come up with a detailed Bill of Quantities and scope of works for all the recommended renovations. This will help when lobbying for financial assistance from Business houses and other donors.

CONCLUSION

The dignity that should be accorded our older generation is something we as a Nation need to attach great importance to. The foregoing report may be specifically meant for Maramba Old people’s  Home because it is the only place visited but issues raised and recommendations made in this report are intended to be crosscutting and are thus expected to have wider or general applicability. The Nation’s prosperity and standing in the comity of civilized Nations may well be tied to how we treat those who are in the twilight of their years and it is this reality that must be embraced and taken seriously not because of any religious obligation to do so but simply that it is the decent thing to do. This report has highlighted the many seemingly small modifications to the existing physical structures at Maramba Old People’s Home that should be made to the living environment of the staff and residents of this facility so that they remain sufficiently motivated. It is now the responsibility of well-wishers especially Business houses to come on board as part of their Social Corporate Responsibility to render material and financial resources to support the urgently needed renovation works to Maramba Old People’s Home

THE

VARIATIONS IN SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IDIOSYNCRASIES AMONG THE BAROTSE (LOZI) AND BANTU BOTATWE.

By Namakando Nalikando-Sinyama

Throughout the dawn of recorded history, humanity has sought to distinguish itself from other life forms. This, it has sometimes done, sadly, with a desire to rather erroneously claim superiority over other species. The Natural world has however, shown this to be far from the truth since glaring frailties in our being have manifested which should make us rethink our self-venerated status. Due to the desire to remain the dominant alpha species, any character trait that is identified as an outlier or undesirable is either masked or scorned up on. Any member of a human community that is born with defects or non-conforming disqualifying features runs a real risk of banishment, stigmatization or even being ostracized as a misfit. The extreme versions of this obsession to project certain or particular Humans as being an all perfect master race of a much higher pedigree thus considered more desirable or sought after is what we have come to witness in the science of Eugenics. In this once highly covert operation, first practiced by The Third Reich under the able Leadership of The Führer (Pardon the cliché) which sought to cleanse the world of what was perceived to be weakness genes by only encouraging coital union or mating between specific sets of people who were thought to possess phenotypic features of an Aryan master Race with Tall height, straight cheek Bones, usually Blonde hair, Blue-Eyed, etc. I am glad to report that, though considered extremely controversial then because of the Bio-Ethical issues that arose and which the practice triggered, this pseudoscience thrives.  Previously, this made scientists only perform their work in secretive laboratories, but it is now pretty much mainstream science with Governments and Corporations openly funding further research into these matters. This ground breaking science was made possible largely due to the pioneering work by The Very Right Reverend Sir Charles Robert Darwin after he so ably espoused the building or foundation stones of the science in his Manuals on The Origin of Species by Artificial and Natural Selection. The highly reclusive Abbott Gregor Mendel further dwelt on the subject matter in even much greater detail at a cellular or molecular level where he identified Genetic interactions as the basis for observable differences among and between species when he worked with legumes.

The preceding material though seeming quite incongruous with the subject above, is actually in tandem and very much in line with it as it seeks to delve into the Philosophical debate on Who we really are as a people and what makes us so uniquely different from the other person. This is at the very center of the age-old Question in Scientific inquiry when endeavoring to unravel the mystery of who or what makes us, us! This, is by no means an attempt by me to redo that highly impressive commentary in the documentary on , 'The Story of God' by the seemingly, never aging and immortal Morgan Freeman, who has long since discovered The Elixir Of Eternal Youth that had so eluded the ancient Egyptians for so many years.

For the purpose of this analysis however, and only for this, I have rather, here made a somewhat deliberate wrong assumption of loosely using the word Tonga to encompass or stand for all the ethnic Groups that are caught up in this piece. You will appreciate how, this includes the Ethnic subgroups of  Soli,Lenje,Ila,Sala,Batwa,Lala,Swaka e.t.c who, whether partially or completely, we as Barotses  are more than proud and happy to have fall under the same umbrella as being Our Tribal Cousins. In case, you are in doubt about this historical truism, I strongly recommend and suggest you consult even the Spirits of your long departed ancestors as they knew more about how we carried on with them than you do. Such was just how vast the extent of the historical Barotse sphere of influence and thus largely explains the many other tribes we proudly have under our belts as Cousins. Cousinship you see, usually arose after past years of belligerent or hostile encounters with different tribal Groups in armed conflict. Thereafter, despite whoever emerged as Victor or the vanquished, ceasefires or truces were arrived at and unwritten declarations of permanent cessation of future Conflicts and hostilities were decreed and agreed upon. These have been holding since. The level of Historical Military Might and extent of influence that an Ethnic Group had, in this case, was usually determined by which one has the greatest number of cousins to this day. After the proverbial hatchet had been buried, what followed are periods of Peace, Mutual respect and Co-existence.

At this point, anyone else without these cultural leanings is strongly advised to stay well-clear of delving into such matters as doing so would be predisposing themselves to serious backlash. It is only a select few of us that find themselves privileged enough to safely manage to navigate with this degree of facility in anthropological analysis of walking a Tribal tight rope, in a balancing act of sorts. By no means an easy feat, especially considering the current highly volatile, charged and polarized ethnic relations made possible by the seemingly perpetual political divide.

'TONGA' MEN

1. Most Tonga men are deemed to have a much more mellowed or down to earth temperament. Of course, remembering that there are huge exception to this perception since when push comes to shove we are all capable of exhibiting character traits we hitherto never knew existed within us. This is sometimes mistaken for their lacking assertiveness.

2. Most Tonga men are considered more sober than their compatriots with a lot of them almost completely abstaining or totally keeping away from the intake of any alcoholic beverages or mood altering substances. As to what extent this may be due to the majority of them coming from an Seventh Day Adventist background that prohibits alcohol, is something I am not exactly sure of. They instead prefer taking the locally brewed non-alcoholic popular cool drinks made from fermenting maize juice or grit, or any carbohydrate rich pulpy porridge which they call Chibwantu or Tobwa.

3. Most Tonga men take to farming as their default profession or fallback activity whether during or after their formal working years. This they have done for long and the region they inhabit have long been considered food baskets that have fed the nation with the staple food of maize. They equally engage in pastoral farming and ranching of cattle for beef and milk. Most of them have even become polygamous with their many wives collectively actively getting involved in farming after they produce an army of children who get recruited into the family vocation.

4. Most Tonga men are seen as, well, there is really no milder or euphemistically possible soothing way of putting it ,downright tight-fisted, frugal, Scrooge-like, miserly to even being down right selfish! This happens even when they are of some means, this they carry on as an excuse for not being wasteful. Stories abound of how some have starved themselves to death but money was later discovered on their person after passing out from severe hypoglycemia. This you notice, how you can never catch one of them dead slaughtering their cattle easily even during emergencies.

5. The Tonga are Never linguistically assertive enough to proudly use their languages in public for fear of being tagged Tribal on account of an ugly stereotypical description of them that is fanned and encouraged by certain political leanings that see them as a direct threat to their hegemonic hold onto power. Thus, this has made many resort to adopting existing lingua francás as a strategy for wanting to conform and seek acceptance from those around them. It had gotten so bad that you could even have two Tonga chaps conversing in a language that is not their own for fear of being known to be of a Bantu Botatwe extraction. This is of course, certainly a rarity among us Barotse, almost a Taboo! Things are however, slowly changing and looking up especially after the ascension of an Ila/Tonga President to the highest office in the land. You can now see and hear them strutting around with an aura of rare confidence proudly assert their tribal identity even in areas of cultural expression such as music and regular public discourse in open spaces.

6. This aspect of their nature Tonga's are never ashamed to even publicly brag about as they liken themselves to possessing the virility of a Bovine Male and of  having loins that pack a punch. Their levels of procreational fecundity is sometimes only discovered at their passing when their Last will and Testament is read out. The surviving spouses then belatedly learn of the litter their dearly departed husbands had broadcasted far and beyond in the community and the many women with whom they would now be made to share the chattel. Their philanderous nature is legendary and is of great renown. So, my dear ladies, your man's abstinence from social lubricants or any intoxicating mood altering substances does not in any way equate to his decency, just know his vice is elsewhere facilitated by his ever roving eye!

7. The average Tonga male is deemed or perceived by many a women folk who, much to the detriment of genuine marital bliss, derive pleasure in overly exerting their despotic feminine marital dominance over men, as being relatively more pliable to even being malleable in a sheepish kind of way. The Tonga man though initially loving, have their limits when they are mishandled and do not react well to ill-treatment by an abusive spouse. Not even her flaunting her most sophisticated femme fatale skills would overcome.

8. The average Tonga is seen as highly focused and determined, never to be swayed by trends in fashion or Vogue in pursuit of their set goal, which is usually increasing the herd count in their kraal!  So overpowering is this ambition that, sometimes you notice some of them completely get entranced as if in La-la Land purely fixated on this mission. They literally have no qualms about appearing hackneyed provided they live true to their ideals and set goals. They maintain a minimalist lifestyle that almost completely shuns and resists the trappings of the modern allure of a sheik life of luxury, glitz and glamour. They would have no problems carrying on the exact same way they do in Mapanza or musanza even when in the world's most cosmopolitan cities like say New York or London that are the credo of the world’s vogue avant-garde awash with the most famous fashion houses. This aspect of their nature totally refuses to be shaken off no matter ones level of education and exposure.

9. They have also been known to be intellectually gifted though within limits since a good number of them have to encounter hurdles of adjusting to city life when brought into boarding schools or tertiary institutions of higher learning in more developed towns. This effectively makes them targets of ridicule by other relatively more urban contemporaries. They are taunted as being Mumbwa Mumbwas or recently as Dundumwenzis which is a denigrating moniker for what is deemed to be their evident lack of exposure and John-Come-Lately to all things modern. They have however, over the years amassed a wealth of experience and wisdom from their rural set up that helps them sail through life in a new environment.

10. The Men are seen to be obsessed with the eating of dry Bread or flour products in public even without a drink to wash it down. If they do find a drink, it is probably one they have made for themselves by dissolving sugar in water or mixing some sachet of sweetening powder usually with a saccharin base.

11. The less exposed Tonga men have had some level of difficulty keeping marriages with modern empowered women with relative amounts of independence and schooling. They seem too accustomed to being with spouses that are usually house wives and home keepers. They have found career women particularly challenging to live with as they quickly brand them too assertive or stubborn for their liking.

12. Tonga men are usually gregarious and you usually find them huddled up in a cluster engaging in their favorite pass time activity of all time, that is, chugging down on some chibwantu or gorging on evenly shared cobs of boiled Zea mays (Maize) while chattering away as they reminisce on their rural escapades or misadventures of pursuing the hottest nubile nymphet in their respective communes or brainstorming on the latest business going on which can make them money by hauling stuff from their villages.

13. The Tonga Youths have this strange and irritating liking for walking around playing some ear splittingly loud music on their cheap Chinese made hand held Music devices. Their preferred genres of music is usually their traditional tunes or pieces done by their tribesmen which they go about blaring in suburbia with sheer abandon.

14.  As it has already been stated above, the average Tonga male has not really been known for their fashion sense. What one notices though, especially among the youthful Tonga chaps is their obsession with wearing striped T-Shirts, usually woven from very cheap fabric. This is seen even among those that have made it to come to the city and to relatively urban settings. This may have been a throwback from the times when these were the only items of what they deemed modern clothing made available to them in the villages by merchants who used to travel to the towns to purchase merchandise for resale to the village people.

'TONGA' WOMEN

Perhaps a side note would help greatly in putting this analysis into perspective. By women, I here refer to both young nubile Girls, Ladies and grown women.

1. Tonga Women are usually soft spoken and are of a cool or mellow temperament. They are mostly of a bulky frame and are known to carry on in a rather languid gait. It is not clear as to what extent this is due to their carrying on a mostly sedentary lifestyle which sees them gouging on their cooking and agricultural produce. You will rarely find many that are of a lean frame. They are mostly of a fair skin hue not in keeping with those migrants from an ancient northerly Nubian extraction as it has been rendered in recorded human history of Bantu southward migration from Our initial Homeland in the fertile valley of Mesopotamia as The original True Ancient Biblical Hebrew Israelite Jews.

2. Most Tonga Women appear almost deceptively timid and most of them belong to the Adventist religious Order. This temperament sometimes renders them susceptible to suitors who consider them sitting ducks and thus easy targets preyed upon for sexual advances by their tribal cousins.

3. Tonga women are largely supportive of their men and you see them accompanying them to the fields to cultivate. It is hoped here that, this supportive nature also exists in the urban set up and not peculiar to the rural environment.

4. Tonga women are largely modest and decent in their outlook and are very loyal and faithful to their spouses. This character trait about them, sadly, is sometimes taken advantage of by some brutish rogues who wrongly interpret them as being sheepish and thus end up mistreating them and sometimes even physically abuse them. They suffer silently hoping against hope that things would get better in the home.

5. Most Tonga women are quite economical and are never known for extravagant spending on material things of little lasting value. They are never really bothered much about keeping up with the current trends of fashion or with the Jones. Their dress code is mostly decent or modest as they are rarely known for publicly baring of their skin.

6. Most Tonga women are unfortunately of humble learning on account of their largely rural upbringing. This has sadly consigned most of them to being Housewives as they are rarely known to be Career Women per se. I am happy to report though that, modern young Tonga ladies are changing this image and are successful career women in their own right.

7. Tonga women are extremely respectful and you will rarely ever hear them raise a voice to their spouse and are never physically violent either.

8. Tonga women, due to their humble exposure are never accomplished in gastronomic or culinary adventures which has made them restrict themselves to rustling up only their specialties in food being local meals or roots fearing to push the frontiers of food by trying out international cuisines. This is perhaps why, Busala (a peculiar pulpy bulbous edible fibrous Root) never misses on the menu in an average Tonga household.

BAROTSE MEN

This is a potentially tricky undertaking for yours truly, as I am venturing into unchartered waters of the Psychoanalysis of Barotse Character by exposing aspects of Our Collective being which I may be ill-advised to publicly disclose as I needed prior clearance from The Order of Barotseland Brotherhood lest I touch on sacrosanct topics not meant for public consumption. I shall, however, endeavor to tread carefully but be as candid as humanly possible, within limits of course. In order to navigate these treacherous waters, I have to equip meself with the tools as imparted by the Father of Psychoanalysis Herr Sigmund Freud and Herr Wilhelm Reich.

1. The Barotse are generally deemed highly educated and extremely intelligent. This has been attributed to Barotseland having been the first to benefit from their encounter with Europeans through missionary education. This perception, I must disclose, is sadly, now merely on paper as there have been developments and secretive Agendas that have been instituted to directly challenge this status quo and completely reverse as it has been deemed rather unfair and probably threatening to certain quarters. A subject for another time perhaps. It should however, be stated in no uncertain terms here that, this general perception had a deep seated truth which we have had nothing to do about as mortal humans. To be absolutely honest, it has little to do with having had a head start in education. The gods in their bounty so benevolently bestowed onto us, unexplainable wit which is natural and will never go away no matter how much evil elements seek to challenge it. Intellectual Wit is Our proud National Curse even to The Nth Generation.

2. The Barotse men are usually humble in demeanor and never brag about their learning and intellect. The only mistake other chaps of humble learning, who are usually from the boreal parts make is, when they misstep and suffer the misfortune of being too loud mouthed and outspoken even on subject matters they are ill-equipped to execute or handle proficiently as a way of showing off. This is when they would most definitely be given a pinch, because in the end, that usually suffices, as only a taste of Barotse Wit for them to savor is enough and they more often than not, regret ever having opened their buccal cavity that is the hole in their faces in a pompous way in the presence of a Murotse. Only rarely, do we ever go Intellectually Nuclear to put certain unrepentant simpletons who want to publicly bask in their charlatanry in their place as we sometimes let them be as we believe, every dog has its day! You see, we do have strictly governed Rules of Engagement in such matters. We usually let such moments slide by as it is never always worth it to needlessly expend our intellectual energies on people with an impermeable cranial department. We choose our battles wisely. I have once or twice attempted to engage folks from these parts even on the most basic of topics but alas, this has always resulted in me suffering from a self-inflicted imploding headache. I have since totally given up trying to get through to them for me own sake as I would want to hang on or cling onto the few ounces of sanity I still have left. We always advise them that, ‘if only they knew just half of what they think they know, it would have been well with them.

“A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring. The shallow draughts intoxicate the Brain.” -Alexander Pope

3. Most Barotse men have strangely enough, been born with an affinity or liking for the product that was Yehushua's first miracle of his ministry at a wedding feast at Caa'na when he turned Water into Alcoholic Wine. This attribute has sadly, either correctly or wrongly, been our undoing and identifying mark where, if one ever encountered a Murotse who is a non-partaker of this National social lubricant of choice, then the credentials of their birthing would immediately be brought into question. So important is this product that, it even had special mention in a very important Unity Treaty The Barotseland Agreement 1964, which sort to make Barotseland part of Zambia when Northern Rhodesia proceeded to independence. This product of whatever vintage and flavour accentuates, whets and horns our wit in a way, I am not yet adequately equipped to describe, as I am of a limited vocabulary. The sad fact though, is this that , many a Murotse have ended up over indulging in it to the point of neglecting their families and failing to achieve their set dreams and life goals by becoming alcoholics who lose focus and sight of what is important in life. If only we could enjoy Our National local brews of Sipesu, Sikokiyana, Sebeni Days and Mbote while being fixed on that which matters most in life like family, spouses and projects. Any Barotse man that does not drink may be given to a different character flaw which their better half is tasked to discover on their own. Of course, remembering that ,our indulgence in social lubricants in public places of 'worship' equally predisposes us to vice. Unless, like some of us, who have taken The Vow of Nimrod, for whom it is not easy to succumb but for a mere mortal it is not easy to resist what happens in public drinking places that are awash with feminine species of easy virtue. Barotses are hereby, duly cautioned never to fall victim to aspects that weaken our National Character as a people. Big Brother Needs You!!

4. Barotse men are sticklers to principles whether out of individual pride or otherwise, this is who we are. We do not easily compromise on what we know is right. It should however, be advised that a distinction between foolish pride and principle be made so that these stances in our approach to life's issues does not get blurred.

5. Barotse men most times, out of our own humility allow mediocre minds ride on us and use us to gain popularity and get ahead of us. They have misinterpreted our humility to be docility and tap into our intelligence and shine through our input but we do not mind much because we have more than enough stock of wit to go around. This may explain why Barotse occupied some of the most sensitive wings of government until the purge was instituted due to their perceived, but imaginary existential threat to their Body Politique as most of us never usually compromise on principle. We have been seen as not being Team Players in facilitating certain arrangements of doubtful legality. Our spouses(depending on where they hail from)are sometimes incensed at our humble fortunes sometimes prod us into being a bit more adventurous like others and not be so risk averse as they see their friends living beyond their means.

6. Most Barotses, not all though, contrary to Our National defining character have since been sadly compromised, even when we do not ordinarily engage in activities that go against our genetic wiring that border on corrupt conduct in public service have had to succumb to the pressures of life. It should however, be stated that, due to the life we have been subjected to, it will not be surprising that a few Barotses have capitulated and have been embroiled in shameful acts that are unlike who the gods have fashioned us to be. It has become an issue of survival by any means necessary even if it goes against our National defining character of moral rectitude.

7. Most of us as Barotses do not know which side of our Bread is buttered and have sort to force a square peg into a round hole. Without having to say much on the subject matter for the sake of political 'correctness' we shall leave it here!

8. Some Barotse men have chosen to ignore the decree by the gods that, as much as we can help it, let a Murotse be yoked to a fellow Murotse in Holy matrimony even if it means suffering the effects of an historical incestuous existence resulting into Biological inbreeding or negative Heterosis it has to be done to keep our Bloodline as pure as possible. This negative effect may happen because, as I have since discovered that, to a great extent, ALL Barotse Nationals are actually related by Blood. We are the unadulterated Seed of Mbuyu Wa Mwambwa through Lewanika. However, due to the unsighted nature of the prevailing amorous emotion that bears down on our loins, others have crossed the cultural divide and ventured yonder to find their definition of a happy existence regardless of conflicting cultural norms. Most have had to regret the decision of going against the dictates of our ancestors but let it be reported that, some have actually had blissful unions as an understandable exception to the general National rule. By the way, preaching unity in diversity does not really apply to us because we still know what we know despite any external pressures of supposed fictitious so-called loose unity of a commingled societal fabric. This is not an elitist ideology of superiority as it would be misinterpreted by many a feeble minds but simply uniqueness and purity of a people that have been steeped in codified Culture for millennia and which the gods in their infinite wisdom sort to preserve against all odds for good reason.

9. Most Barotse men due to running into some form of financial and material opulence have had their priorities twisted and their true sense of being totally clouded so as to even blur their true identity as a people. They allow their children to learn English and other unfamiliar languages other than their own. This may also arise due to having encountered other ethnic groups at various levels. This makes their offsprings to be vulnerable and completely disillusioned and lack any sense of true self-definition, sense of belonging and cultural grounding. This form of cultural bastardization cannot be condoned and should be checked in earnest. This, does not in any way, mean you stop your children from learning or tapping into other cultures, God knows we have the Brain for learning language. My dear Mother has always held that, "Linguistic Dexterity Is Directly Proportional To one’s Intellectual Acumen." - Shuttie Florence Namakau Libuta.(Her first fore name was inspired by Nevil Shute, author of number of books such as A Town Like Alice,Pied Piper, No Highway and On The Beach. Anyone that has Barotse Blood coursing through their veins, whether born from a mixed intermarriage arrangement, is and shall always be, a Murotse in full even if they deny it. We do not have half or fractions of human beings where we come from because our Genes are dominant. Half this and half that does not exist with us!!!

10. Most Barotse men are pretty much risk averse as they tend to employ their intellect even in matters that simply need no second thought to invest in. We are overly analytical to the point of missing out on most opportunities. We should sometimes learn to test the depth of a pond with both feet in all matters Business. This, however , does not mean being foolhardy or naively reckless in our investment choices as our Achilles heel of not being streetwise sells us out.

BAROTSE WOMEN

It must be said here that, I now venture deep into a very dangerous territory for obvious reasons. I am literally skating on extremely thin ice here. I risk getting some amount of stick for anything that I will say that will not be in conformity with the sisterhood. Who ever said I was a Conformist anyway? All gloves are off. Let us slug it out bare knuckles. So here goes, I am jumping into a void without a parachute folks!!!

1. Barotse ladies or girls are by nature extremely pretty and have attracted the attention of suitors of all manner and hues. Whether they be naturally or artificially fair skinned or shiny nuggets of Nubian Chocolate skin and who are usually of a lanky frame have been acclaimed to be of exceptional visual appeal. This has sadly, made some of them without moral grounding and focus, fall prey to a less than virtuous lifestyle as they choose to wallow in the attention they receive from different men thus lending credence to the general perception that on average, most of our sisters are given to easy virtue. Which I find to be a Shakespearean tragedy of sorts indeed.

2. Barotse Women, Our Mothers that is, being of a different generation to that of the modern Murotse lady or girl,  are extremely virtuous and focused in their approach to life  and more faithful to their lifelong partners which makes some of us envy our fathers for having been so lucky to have married women like our mothers . Of course, never to the extent of suffering from The Oedipus Complex silly! We admire and cherish their discipline thus wonder just whatever became of their daughters with permanent roving eyes totally lacking in focus and virtue!

3. Barotse ladies are extremely intelligent and very assertive which many an average male of other cultures actually find somewhat intimidating. They need to be cautious though as not to appear unreasonably cheeky, stubborn and pompous to their spouses or potential spouses which would only lead to the detriment of their marital blissful existence. There is a thin line between assertiveness and unreasonable stubbornness. This happens to be true whether they are conventionally educated or not, remember Our ancestral curse as a people! It is only those that can match their wit who dare venture. Others choose to use material wealth to win them over but if ever they got abusive ,a Barotse Princess has no qualms whatsoever about telling her people she is leaving a less than cordial existence with an uncouth brute of doubtful upbringing. They would so easily opt to live in poverty and squalor than compromise on Principle. They truly know their worth as Human beings of a precious pedigree of Royals.

4. We are not proud to state that, there has been a lingering perception that Our women as custodians of our households are sometimes found wanting in  their standards of hygiene around the home. This could use some upping. My own mother tells me about how stories are told of how if you ever went into a Police Compound, to identify a Lozi household you only needed to look out for one that was not sparkling clean.

5. Most Barotse ladies being in the know, are quite materialistic in nature to the point of overly stressing their partners. This predisposes them to an unhealthy natural bend towards the acquisition of money and material things by any means even compromising their moral standing and principles if they ever existed at all!  This sadly makes them seek out things of immediate momentary value instead of forging long-lasting human relationships. We have unfortunately lost a great many of them to the ravages of sexually transmitted diseases due to this very character flaw.

6. Many a Murotse ladies are seen to be overly friendly to the point of predisposing themselves to unhealthy attention which they sadly gloat in as it probably makes them feel they are at the center of attention with devastating consequences.
